Today, August 23, is Treaty Six Day. Mayor Tyler Gandam has issued a statement in recognition of this Treaty and the importance of continuing to grow our Treaty relationship with Indigenous peoples:
"Treaty No. 6 has been in place for the past 146 years. As we take a moment to mark Treaty Six Day and continue on our journey of Truth and Reconciliation, it is important to acknowledge and learn from the experiences of the First Peoples who have a deep relationship with this land. Honouring the Treaty relationship is key to achieving lasting reconciliation and stronger relationships that will benefit our community, region, and future generations. We are all Treaty people, and so must work collaboratively to ensure the terms, spirit, and intent of Treaty are honoured and respected."
